The MicrobeLibrary (ML) is a peer-reviewed, digital media center for undergraduate microbiology. The scientific scope of the library covers the microbiological sciences as outlined in the ASM curriculum guidelines updated by the ASM Task Force on Curriculum Guidelines for Undergraduate Microbiology Education in 2012. The guidelines identify six core concepts that provide a framework for 27 fundamental concept statements, four scientific thinking competencies, and seven key skills. These statements, competencies, and skills were selected to promote deep understanding of concepts and skills that are deemed to be of lasting importance beyond the classroom and laboratory.

Additional information can also be found in the ASM biosafety teaching guidelines, as updateded by the ASM Task Committee on Laboratory Biosafety in 2012These guidelines represent best practices for safely handling microbes, based on the safety requirements found in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC)'s Biosafety in Microbiological and Biomedical Laboratories (BMBL). Guidelines for safely handling microbes at both biosafety level 1 (BSL1) and at biosafety level 2 (BSL2) were developed. The guidelines are brief by design for ease of use and provide educators with a clear and consistent way to safely work with microorganisms in the teaching laboratory.

All content is peer reviewed for scientific accuracy, instructional value and visual and/or audio clarity. The primary target audience is microbiology educators, although some sections may be appropriate for students.
